Frequently asked questions

Is this a commercialized tourist trap, or an authentic cultural experience?

A: While the village of Gharb Soheil has become popular with travelers due to its beautiful architecture and markets, it remains a real, living, and breathing community. People live, work, and raise families here. By booking this private tour, we bypass the heavy tourist crowds and take you into a vetted family home, ensuring your visit directly and ethically supports the local economy.

Can we choose to ride a camel to or from the village?

A: Yes, absolutely! If you would like to experience a camel ride along the desert shores of the Nile, just let us know when booking. We can easily arrange for camels to meet you at a designated point on the West Bank and walk you right into the entrance of the village as an optional upgrade.

What should we wear when visiting the Nubian Village?

A: The Nubian community is traditional and conservative. Out of respect for the local culture, we highly recommend dressing modestly. Loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is ideal. It is also a very sandy destination with unpaved streets, so closed-toe walking shoes or sturdy sandals are much better than high heels or flip-flops.

Are the crocodiles kept in the homes treated safely and humanely?

A: The relationship between Nubians and crocodiles is ancient, rooted in Pharaonic times when the Nile crocodile was worshipped as the god Sobek. Today, the villagers rescue and raise a small number of crocodiles in enclosed pools within their courtyards as a continuation of this heritage. They are handled with deep respect, and your guide will ensure you interact with them safely and ethically.
